Ireland Rugby - Individual records

  • Of the 28 players known to have earned 90 or more Test caps, three are current members of the Ireland team. Ireland's all-time caps leaders are John Hayes and Brian O'Driscoll with 102. Trailing them is Ronan O'Gara with 99. Two other members of this club have been recently active—Malcolm O'Kelly, with 92 caps, made his last appearance in the 2009 Six Nations, and Peter Stringer, with 91, made his last appearance in the 2009 June Tests but is currently in the national setup with Ireland Wolfhounds (A team). This does not include caps for the Lions; when those are included, O'Driscoll's combined total of 108 international caps places him first among players currently active at Test level following the international retirement of Australia flanker George Smith.
  • O'Gara holds the Ireland record for Test points with 963, placing him sixth all-time in international rugby, and making him one of only seven to have reached the 900 mark. The only active players ahead of him are Jonny Wilkinson, the all-time leader, and Dan Carter. David Humphreys lies 2nd in the national list with 560 pts & Michael Kiernan is 3rd on 308 pts.
  • O'Gara is also the second highest points scorer in the Six Nations, with 527 compared to Jonny Wilkinson's 529. The lead changed hands many times during 2010 Six Nations, with O'Gara briefly becoming the leading points scorer on 3 occasions.
  • The record try scorer is O'Driscoll, with 40 tries in his 102 Ireland appearances. Denis Hickie (29 tries), Shane Horgan (21), Girvan Dempsey (19) & Geordan Murphy (18) complete the top 5 Irish try scorers.
  • O'Driscoll is also second on the all-time list for Test matches as captain with 64, trailing only current South Africa captain John Smit (67). O'Driscoll has captained Ireland 63 times and the Lions once.
  • Keith Wood has the scored the most tries for a forward and he currently holds a world record for most international test tries scored by a hooker which is 15.
Thomas Gisborne Gordon, who played for Ireland between 1877-78 is the only one handed player to have competed in international rugby of either code.
